Steck Cattle Fundamentals

The foundation of Steck Cattle was built long before our name was ever hung on a barn.

For Craig, it started on his family’s purebred Shorthorn operation in west-central Illinois. Growing up in the cattle business meant learning the fundamentals early — daily care, cattle evaluation, clipping and fitting, breeding decisions and, most importantly, the value of good cow families.

Craig learned to study pedigrees and understand the generations behind an animal. He developed an appreciation for cattle that are more than just good on one particular day — females with the structure, maternal ability and genetic value to remain relevant as the industry changes.

That foundation continued through Black Hawk East Community College and the University of Illinois, where Craig competed on nationally competitive livestock judging teams and had the opportunity to learn alongside some of the most respected livestock minds in the industry.

Stephanie’s path started differently.

Growing up on a small farm outside Omaha, Nebraska, she found her love for the cattle business through 4-H and showing steers. Competition taught her the value of hard work, preparation and attention to detail, while the people she met along the way showed her just how meaningful the relationships built through livestock can become.

Her creative side eventually led her to Creighton University and a career combining design, marketing and agriculture. Today, through SCI – Stephanie Cronin, Inc., Stephanie works with livestock producers and agricultural businesses across the country — experience that has also shaped how we market cattle, communicate with customers and tell the story behind the Steck Cattle program.

Then We Built Our Own.

Steck Cattle began with a simple goal: raise cattle we believe in, do things the right way and surround ourselves with good people.

What started small has grown into a diverse cow herd built around proven females and cow families. We place tremendous value on maternal strength, phenotype, predictability and cattle that can generate.

We have been fortunate to raise cattle that have competed successfully at every level — including national champions — but banners alone have never defined our program.

The fundamentals still matter.

Study the cows. Make thoughtful matings. Take care of the cattle. Work hard. Treat people right. Stand behind what you sell.

And never stop learning.

Today, some of our favorite days aren’t necessarily the ones when we’re standing behind a backdrop. They’re the days spent helping a young person find their first heifer, talking through a feeding question, helping a family make a breeding decision or watching one of our customers accomplish a goal they’ve worked toward all year.

Because at the end of the day, we aren’t just trying to raise better cattle.

We’re trying to build something our kids are proud to be part of, help other families do the same and leave this industry a little better than we found it.
